Don’t go to the Bible for answers! Do this instead…

In the guest blog post below, Hannah explains an important insight about how God uses questions to deepen our relationship with Him…

The Bible IS a book of answers, but it’s much more than that. When people go to the Bible looking for answers to a specific question without first understanding God’s character, they can end up taking verses out of context and getting confused.

We were created to find answers through relationship. As we walk with God, we learn to recognize and respond to His voice. We experience Him as the answer to our questions.

Because we find answers in relationship, God uses questions throughout the Bible as a tool to take conversations deeper. Jesus (and other rabbis of His day) used this same strategy. He often answered questions with another question, not to be evasive, but to show respect for the intellect of His listeners and invite them to engage in a deeper conversation.

One of my favorite things about the LK10 community is the curiosity and spirit of inquiry. It’s exciting to be part of a group of believers that’s willing to experiment and partner with God. Valuing questions over answers also helps us stay humble, and embrace a healthy level of mystery.

Here are 10 questions from the Bible that challenge and energize me. God invites me back to them again and again. (click on each question to see the reference and read the context)

Do you love me?
What do you want me to do for you?
Where are you?
Who told you that you were naked?
What good is it to gain the whole world and lose your own soul?

Do you want to be healed?

Who do you say that I am?

Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?

Where do you feed your flock at midday?

What should I tell them?
